Silloth is a small seaside town with a long, open promenade, and the walk north from it to Grune Point is pure Solway: huge skies, mudflats, wading birds and the hills of Galloway across the water.
The route follows the promenade past the lighthouse to Skinburness, then a rougher coastal path out along the spit to Grune Point. At the tip stands a Second World War pillbox topped by a cairn remembering four Silloth firemen. You return along the sheltered inner side of the spit, with views over the estuary towards Anthorn, and walk back through Skinburness.
It is flat the whole way and easy to follow. Bring binoculars and check the tides.
The route
- 1
The promenade
From the car park by Silloth Green, join the promenade and turn right, with the sea on your left. Follow it past the lighthouse to the slipway at the far end.
- 2
To Skinburness
Beyond the slipway, continue on the rougher path between the boulders and the backs of the gardens, following the England Coast Path towards Skinburness.
- 3
Out to Grune Point
Keep to the coast, ignoring the path to the beach, and follow the clear path out along the spit to the pillbox and the tip of Grune Point.
- 4
Along the inner shore
Turn back along the other side of the spit, keeping the water on your left, and follow the path and then a wide track past the houses into Skinburness.
- 5
Back to Silloth
Walk back through Skinburness and follow the road and promenade south to Silloth and the car park.
