Maryport is a Georgian harbour town with a much older story on the cliff above it. Next to the Senhouse Roman Museum lie the earthworks of a Roman fort that guarded this stretch of the Solway coast, and the museum holds a remarkable collection of altar stones and inscriptions found on the site.

This loop starts by the harbour and the Maritime Museum, climbs the long flight of steps known as the Back Brow to Fleming Square, and walks north along the sea brows past the Roman museum. A path then runs along the grassy cliff top with wide views across the Solway Firth to Scotland, before dropping to the promenade for an easy stroll back into town.

It is short, varied and full of interest, and works well combined with a visit to either museum.

The route

  1. 1

    Harbour to Fleming Square

From the Maritime Museum by the harbour, walk up King Street and turn right at Brow Street to climb the Back Brow steps. At the top, follow the grass path left to Fleming Square and its Georgian houses.

  2. 2

    To the Roman museum

Walk north along the sea brows road. The Senhouse Roman Museum is the last building before open country, with the site of the Roman fort beside it.

  3. 3

    Along the sea brows

Follow the hard-surfaced path north along the top of the brows, with the Solway on your left, and continue on the cliff path towards Maryport Golf Club.

  4. 4

    Down to the promenade

Drop down to the shore path below the golf course and turn back south along the promenade.

  5. 5

    Back into town

Follow the long promenade back towards Maryport. Opposite the play area, turn left past Maryport Millennium Green and walk down King Street to the harbour.
