About Blencathra via Sharp Edge
## The Ultimate Lakeland Scramble
Sharp Edge on Blencathra offers the most exhilarating ridge walk in the northern Lakes. This razor-sharp arête provides genuine mountaineering excitement without requiring ropes or technical gear, but it demands respect, confidence, and a good head for heights.
## The Approach
Start from Mousthwaite Comb car park and follow the path around the base of the fell to reach the foot of Sharp Edge. The scramble begins gradually but soon narrows to a genuine knife-edge with dramatic drops on both sides. Move carefully and deliberately, testing each handhold and foothold.
## The Scramble Experience
The most exposed section requires you to straddle the ridge like a horse, shuffling forward with drops plunging away on either side. It's genuinely thrilling but not technically difficult for confident scramblers. The psychological challenge is often greater than the physical demands.
## Safety and Conditions
Never attempt Sharp Edge in wet, icy, or windy conditions when the rock becomes treacherous. This route is absolutely not suitable for inexperienced walkers or anyone uncomfortable with exposure. The White Horse Inn in Scales provides perfect post-adventure celebration. Allow a full day and carry emergency equipment including headtorch, first aid, and emergency shelter.
